After leaving Japan, I was assigned to a basic training company at Ft. Knox. They made me an acting Corporal and acting Drill Instructor [DI]. They wanted me to go to DI school but I would of had to re-up, no thanks!!!
After Ft. Knox, 1969, I went home, put all my Army stuff in a closet and spent the next 30 years trying to forget it all. After the Gulf War, Patriotism came back and I joined VFW Post 10380 in Green Township, Ohio. They have an Honor Guard and we perform all kinds of ceremonies including Missing Man and close to 100 Military funerals a year. We all wear the uniform with our rank and awards per our DD 214's.
There is a local family owned restaurant in Cincinnati, Ohio called Price Hill Chili that we always go to after each event that we participate in. My son made us a round table out of Walnut and inset emblems from each branch of the service plus purple heart, CIB, etc.
One of my highlights was to present a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Washington, DC. It was a tremendous HONOR.
We perform the Missing Man Table Ceremony about 8 times a year, mostly at local high schools.
We present the Colors at all the LaSalle High School home football games.
We get to meet some of the best and nicest people. Here I am with Amy Grant.
We get to meet Generals.
We were at a Veterans funeral and she was also a Registered Nurse and we found out that RN's also have a moving ceremony for the deceased.
Bob Abrams, Rocky Bleier and me.
I received a plaque from the Cincinnati Warbirds for my service. My Niece is a member and presented it to me.
I am also a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus. Here I am with a General at the annual birthday celebration for William Henry Harrison in North Bend, Ohio.
